Episode 4: How To Cultivate A Mindset Of Peace And FulFillment
Welcome back to the Vision to Victory blog, where we talk about practical ways to turn your dreams into reality. Today, we’re exploring a topic that affects all of us: happiness.
We all want it. Whether we realize it or not, every goal, pursuit, or desire we chase is often rooted in one simple hope—that it will make us happier. But what exactly is happiness? And how do we experience more of it?
Let’s dig in.
A Clearer Definition of Happiness
There are a lot of misconceptions about happiness. Many people see it as a destination—something you achieve when you finally land the dream job, get into the perfect relationship, or check off a milestone. But that’s not quite right.
Dr. John A. Schindler, a well-known author and researcher, offers a refreshing definition:
“Happiness is a state of mind in which our thinking is pleasant a good share of the time.”
I love this perspective because it brings happiness inward. It’s not about what you have or who you’re with—it’s about how you think. It’s a mental state, not an achievement.
And this distinction matters. Because when we believe happiness is something we “get” from external things, we’ll always feel like it’s just out of reach. But when we understand it’s internal, we gain control.
Why Happiness Matters
Is this just about feeling good? In part, yes. But happiness has far-reaching impacts. Research consistently shows that happy people are more:
Productive
Creative
Motivated
Successful
They’re also more likely to reach their goals and live fulfilled lives.
So if you’re chasing a dream—and I hope you are—cultivating happiness isn’t just “nice,” it’s essential.
3 Common States of Mind That Block Happiness
If happiness is a pleasant mental state, there are three competing mindsets that can keep us from experiencing it:
1. Busyness vs. Productivity
Busyness is about how much you’re doing. Productivity is about what you’re doing—and whether it matters.
It’s easy to fall into the “busy” trap. We wear it like a badge of honor. But checking endless tasks off your list doesn’t mean you’re living a meaningful or effective life. Productivity requires alignment—doing the things that actually move you toward your goals.
2. Anxiety vs. Peace
Anxiety pulls us into the past or future—rehashing regrets or worrying about what’s next. Peace, on the other hand, is rooted in the present.
You can’t control everything, but you can control where you place your attention. Being present—whether you’re enjoying your coffee or having a real conversation—reduces anxiety and increases peace.
3. Depression vs. Vitality
Depression focuses on what’s missing. Vitality focuses on what’s good and abundant in your life.
Here’s a truth I live by: you will find what you’re looking for. If you’re focused on negativity, you’ll see it everywhere. But if you practice gratitude and look for the good, you’ll find that too.
5 Daily Habits to Cultivate a Happier Life
So, how do we cultivate happiness on a regular basis? These five habits have made a major difference in my life. They’re simple but powerful—and they work.
1. Be Present
Happiness doesn’t exist in the past or future—it exists in the now. Turn off distractions. Be fully where you are. This one habit can completely reshape your mindset.
2. Engage in Prayer or Meditation
Whatever your spiritual beliefs, creating space for quiet reflection or spiritual connection can help you feel more grounded and at peace.
3. Practice Gratitude
Every morning, think of three things you’re grateful for. They don’t have to be big. The smell of coffee. A friend’s text. A warm shower. Gratitude shifts your focus from what’s lacking to what’s already good.
4. Do Something Kind for Someone Else
Kindness lifts both the giver and the receiver. If you're feeling down, try encouraging someone else. It’s a simple way to lift your own spirit and theirs.
5. Move Your Body
Physical activity isn’t just for your health—it’s for your mind. Exercise releases feel-good chemicals, reduces stress, and helps you feel more alive.
Bonus Habit: Feed Your Mind
One final tip: read or listen to something inspiring every day. Whether it’s a book, a podcast, or a short article, fill your mind with ideas that challenge, encourage, and educate you.
Not sure where to start? I’d be happy to share a few book recommendations—just reach out!
Final Thoughts
Happiness isn’t about chasing something “out there.” It’s about nurturing your inner world. By shifting your mindset, practicing these habits, and avoiding the traps of busyness, anxiety, and negativity, you’ll move closer to the life you want—and enjoy it more along the way.
